Why seed saving matters for pollinators

Genetic diversity within a plant species helps populations adapt to changing conditions, including a shifting climate and new pests. Losing regionally adapted, open pollinated plant varieties can quietly narrow the range and resilience of the forage available to pollinators.

How large seed banks work

Institutions such as the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway, and national gene banks coordinated through bodies like the Food and Agriculture Organization's International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources, store seed samples at low temperature and humidity, sometimes below minus 18 degrees Celsius, to keep them viable for years to decades as a backup against crop failure, disaster, or conflict.

Saving seed at home

For most garden flowers, seed saving follows a similar pattern, let a healthy flower fully mature and dry on the plant, then collect seed heads on a dry day, remove the seed from the surrounding chaff, and store it in a paper envelope, not plastic, in a cool, dry, dark place.

Open pollinated versus hybrid

Seed saved from open pollinated or heirloom varieties will generally grow true to the parent plant the following year. Seed saved from F1 hybrid varieties often will not, since hybrids are bred from two distinct parent lines and their offspring can vary unpredictably.

Joining the exchange

World Bee Garden members can log surplus seed they have saved and offer it through community seed swaps, helping regionally adapted, pollinator friendly varieties circulate and persist locally, rather than relying solely on commercial supply.
