From hollow logs and clay pots to modern movable frames
Rock art in Spain dating back roughly 8,000 years depicts a figure harvesting honey from a wild nest, and residue analysis of ancient pottery across Europe, the Near East, and North Africa shows beeswax was in widespread human use by the Neolithic period.
Ancient Egyptians kept bees in stacked clay cylinders and moved hives along the Nile to follow flowering crops, one of the earliest documented forms of migratory beekeeping, depicted in temple reliefs more than 4,000 years old.
For much of European history, bees were kept in woven straw baskets called skeps, or in hollow logs. These fixed comb designs required destroying the comb, and often the colony, to harvest honey, since the comb could not be removed intact.
In 1852, the Reverend Lorenzo Langstroth, working in the United States, patented a hive built around a precise internal spacing now known as 'bee space', roughly 6 to 9 millimetres, that bees will neither fill with comb nor seal with propolis. This allowed frames of comb to be lifted out, inspected, and replaced without destroying them, and the Langstroth hive, still the most widely used design today, made modern, non-destructive beekeeping possible.
Modern beekeepers monitor colony health, manage the Varroa mite through integrated pest management, requeen colonies to maintain productivity and temperament, and increasingly work alongside conservationists to support both managed honey bees and the wild pollinators that share the same landscape.
